Key Facts:
HISTORY
The Ferrari Testarossa is one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable cars of the 1980s and early 1990s—a design and engineering statement that defined an era of bold excess, unrestrained performance, and unmistakable style. The name “Testarossa,” meaning “red head” in Italian, pays homage to Ferrari’s 1950s racing heritage, but by the time the 1991 model arrived, the Testarossa had firmly established itself as a road-going legend.
Powered by a naturally aspirated 4.9-liter flat-12 engine producing around 385 horsepower, the Testarossa offered breathtaking performance for its time—0 to 100 km/h in around 5.3 seconds, with a top speed just under 290 km/h. But more than just numbers, it delivered a visceral driving experience: the howl of the flat-12 behind you, the gated 5-speed manual transmission, the low-slung seating position, and the wide rear track made it unlike anything else on the road.
Designed by Pininfarina, the Testarossa’s styling is as daring as it is functional. The wide rear end—measuring over two meters across—accommodated radiators on each side, cooled via those now-famous straked side intakes. The car’s dramatic silhouette, low wedge profile, pop-up headlights, and sharply creased lines gave it a presence that nothing else could match then—or now.By 1991, the Testarossa was in its most refined phase, with subtle improvements over earlier versions including upgraded suspension and more developed interior finishes. It was a car for the true driving enthusiast who also wanted to make a statement.
As for collectibility, the Testarossa has grown significantly in desirability over the past decade. It captures a golden era of analog supercars—pre-electronic aids, pre-turbo, pure Ferrari. Its unique engine layout, iconic design, and relative ease of ownership (by classic Ferrari standards) make it a standout in any collection.
When it comes to color, black is among the rarest and most desirable. Of the approximately 7,177 Testarossas produced between 1984 and 1991, it is estimated that fewer than 400 cars worldwide were delivered in Nero (black)—many paired with contrasting interiors. A black-on-black Testarossa is even rarer, giving the car an even more aggressive, elegant, and timeless look. Most Testarossas were delivered in red—Rosso Corsa—which makes black examples particularly coveted by discerning collectors looking for something that stands out in a sea of red.
OUR Testarossa
Our magnificent Nero Ferrari Testarossa was delivered new in April 1991 through Crepaldi Auto S.P.A. in Lombardia. Finished in striking Black over a black leather interior—a rare and highly sought-after specification—this color combination perfectly complements the Testarossa’s dramatic, angular design.
Originally residing in Italy and later in France, the car was traded in for a Ferrari 599 GTB by its previous owner. After an extensive search for the perfect example, the current owner acquired the car in France and had it transported directly to Toni Auto in Maranello—just opposite the Ferrari factory on Via Abetone Inferiore—where it received comprehensive servicing. A full service, including timing belt replacement, was carried out in May 2022 at 27,700 km.
Since then, the car has been meticulously maintained, with the most recent service performed by RetroSportiva in Munich in July 2024 at 36,227 km. This included replacement of the front hood struts and front brake pads. Driven approximately 3,000 km per year, the car has been used regularly for long-distance journeys, during which the owner ensured that every component operated flawlessly.
Beyond its impeccable mechanical condition, this Nero Testarossa impresses with its exceptional cosmetic presentation. The leather upholstery and carpeting are in remarkably preserved condition—rarely seen in a car of this era. A Tubi Style exhaust system is currently installed, while the original exhaust is included with the car.
An icon of 1980s and 1990s automotive design, this stunning Testarossa not only features a rare and desirable color scheme but also comes with its original books, stamped service book, service records and invoices, as well as the all-important toolkit and jack.
